MY LOVE FOR CHILDREN
I was thinking about something the other day and realized my readers have no idea how I became a nanny. So here is my short story. I lived in Boston in my early years and I remembered while I was in middle school. (Thomas Edison Middle School) for the week my mom would be away at work. So it was my older sister, myself and my younger brothers. We had church family as well as blood family around us plus my mother knew the doorman and he kept in contact with her about who was coming and going and at what time. One day my mom took me to work with her. I knew what she did but never seen her in action. We arrived at the home where my mom worked. A really fairy tale looking mansion of a house. A wrap around driveway and a massive backyard. I was introduced to a really lovely woman and her 2 children both girls and around 3 and 5 yrs of age. They were very friendly and apparently loved my mother because they yelled her name out and ran to give her a hug. I thought it strange cause I was not that affectionate with my mother but I guess they were. My mom took me around this huge mansion and explained what the girls loved to do for fun and what her duties were. During the girls nap time, my mom made us lunch and then she went back to work. I remember very vividly as though it happened just yesterday. My mom went and got a bucket of soapy water and got on her knees and started scrubbing the floor. I have never seen my mom scrubbed a floor before. I have seen her mopped, sweep, dust, do laundry by hand and with a washing machine even vacuumed but it was all done for us her children her home. Here my mom was scrubbing someone's kitchen floor. I remember just staring at her and thinking..... WOW! This is what my mom does. She would talk to me while she worked and asked about school and church. Of course I was not interested in talking about those subjects but I kept her company. As she was finishing the floor I heard the girls call out to her. She finished up and went to get them out of bed. I remember yet again very vividly my mom giving them hugs and asking them how was their nap? Yes it was strange to me to see that side of my mom cause I didn't see that side of her on the weekend when she's at home with us..... her kids. We all played in this huge backyard until it was almost dinner time. I have to say those two girls really loved my mom. I felt a little uneasy with so much affection being given to two strangers (in my eye) but never told my mom. One Friday I went with my mom to work and towards leaving for the day. My moms boss asked her if it was okay for me to babysit the 2 girls. I did not want to do it cause back then I thought I had a life, but when she said she will pay me. I had a new life for that weekend. I could not believe I got paid to play with two kids eat dinner and put them to bed and have time to watch my favorite show back then (Three's Company) That was my first paying job and I loved it. I would continually babysit for the girls ever so often and made some nice pocket change. Until my mom no longer worked for that family. Now that I have experience with babysitting I would try and find little summer babysitting jobs here and there and found a love for taking care of children. I would like to say that my mom is an unbelievably strong woman. Never complained not once to her children about her job or having pains in her body. She's awesome and I am proud to have shared those moments with her.
