Sorry about my absence for the past couple of days. I have had some exciting news which I can't really share at this point but will soon.
So here I am in my apt in Brooklyn NY with no job and rent due. I took little odd and end jobs while I looked for a new nanny position. I frequently searched a newspaper called the Irish Echo which was quite popular with nannies looking for jobs. I saw an ad looking for a live in nanny for a family with a 3 month old baby. Thought it would be perfect. I called and left a detailed short message about who I am and my contact info. Thought nothing about it after the call. Well due to me not working I moved in with my brother and his wife. While staying there my mom visited me and we decided to go to Coney Island Beach just to get away even for a moment from my stressful life. While at the beach. My mom and I talked about my past job situations and how desperate I was to find a new job. She calmly said to me write in the sand " I NEED A JOB" then go into the water and just let the water cover our head. I did as she told me to and then enjoyed the rest of the time we were there. We went home and within an hour of us being home I received a phone call from the job in Long Island. We talked briefly on the phone and made arrangements to meet for an interview. I went to their home and met the family. The husband who was warm, funny pleasant and inviting and his wife who was also the same just not as funny invited me in. We spoke intensely about my qualifications and some personal background info. I remember the husband being about 6 ft tall and having a long salt and pepper beard and mustache with matching long hair pulled back in a pony tail. He was wearing a T shirt with a ring of psychedelic looking patterns and colours on it and his wife who was only about 5'4 maybe 5'5 in height. A little heavy set woman with long brown hair and average looking. I walked into the home that was very cozy a little untidy but felt like a home. We had water and coffee and talked extensively about my background in childcare. Everything went well and we said our goodbyes. I got home and played the waiting the game. I received a call from them late one evening and I was offered the job. I was asked to start that following Monday but needed to come in on a Sunday night per our agreement. So My first day on the job was very easy going. The husband stayed mostly in his home office, only came out for lunch and bathroom breaks. I would take walks around the neighborhood and local parks. Get to meet the other nannies that lived and worked in the neighborhood. After a few months of routine walking around meeting a few other nannies in the neighborhood. I met a few that stuck out in my memory. I was sitting on the park bench while baby was sleeping in the stroller and another nanny sat next to me. She was from Haiti and had a very strong accent. She asked if I was new. I replied yes. She then went on to say that she thought so, because she never saw me before. She asked how I like the job and I told her it was fine, family was great to me. She started telling me how her job was. She was so unhappy because she had to work so many hours with so little pay and how this family was so disgusting. She has to constantly clean up after grown people and their children. She was just "spilling the tea" about all the things that went on in this household. I started feeling uncomfortable..... not that I did not have my own stories, but it just felt weird. Thank goodness the baby woke up I said my goodbyes and walked back to the house. One Thursday morning when I was getting breakfast for myself. My boss asked me if I could take baby with me to my room that night cause they have friends coming over to watch "Friends" (yea... the comedy) I did not mind because at that point we had build up quite a relationship. It felt more of a family than a boss employee relationship. That night their friends (a couple) came over. I remember my bosses friend walked in and we were introduced. She kept staring at me but with not much to say. I took baby with me to my room and we watched tv until the guests left sometimes it would be until baby fell asleep. It went like this every Thursday night. "Friends Night" Now the pay was not at all great and I never made anything extra. But like I said they treated me like family and that was just enough for me. Even had my boyfriend over for dinner where we all sat down and enjoyed a meal that she cooked for us. I found myself being the person she would talk to when things were to much for her to deal with. Nothing big just sometimes a hard day at work ( she was a teacher)and she needed someone to listen. She shared how she met her husband and some in-law family issues that was just irritating to her. I being a bit younger and had not experience those situations would just listen. One day both employers had gone into the city for business. I was tidying up and heard a frantic knock on the door. I opened it up to find my employers friend standing there. the "friends " guest. The one that just stared at me when we first met. She asked if her friend was home. I told her no and instead of leaving she came in and sat down. She started crying then began to start talking and talking and talking about her issues with her boyfriend who was a lawyer but had some sort of disability that slowed him down mentally. I offered her a glass of water and at the same time my employer walked in. I excused myself took baby and went into the backyard. Would you believe she had been coming over every Thursday for their "Friends" hangouts and never, not once, ever thanked me or even apologized for the situation that occurred between her and myself. (maybe she was embarrassed). A couple of years had gone by and my employers sat me down and explained that they were going to put baby in daycare. It was to much for them to keep me on the payroll. I knew this to be true because I would hear them on the phone trying to get loans for the mortgage payments. So I kinda expected this. I would not have to leave right away. I had a couple of months to look for another job. They did introduce me to a couple that they were friendly with. Not so much friends with but they were friendly. They knew them for a significant amount time because the husband was a fellow teacher and they knew they were looking for a nanny for their two children. I met them and thought immediately they were a bit older looking to have children around 2 and 5 She looked around the age of 50 and he looked around the same age. Very quite, drab looking couple. I would sometimes babysit for them when they wanted to go out and that would be their way of introducing my self to the children. Well... my job finally came to an end. I remember crying like a baby and giving hugs to the family especially baby. I remember my employer saying that we would always see each other cause they lived not to far away from my soon to be new employers. So here I was at this new job with the parents of 2 children.. Ohhhhhh I wish someone would of warned me about this job.
UNBELIEVABLE!
